OUR JOURNEY FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

1959

On July 12, 1959, the first service for our church was held at the Convention Hall in Sedalia, MO, with Reverend Strickert leading the worship. Later that year, Reverend Wolf served the congregation.

1960s

On April 13, 1960, “Our Savior” became the official name of the congregation. We were officially organized on June 5, 1960, with 100 members and 61 children. Then, on December 11, 1960, Reverend Lemke was installed as the first official pastor.

On September 8, 1963, we broke ground at our current worship site on West U.S. 50 and held our first service on April 12, 1964. The following month, May of 1964, Our Savior Lutheran Church was dedicated on Pentecost Sunday.

1970s

In 1978, the church sign was placed along Highway 50, mosaic tile was added, an expanded altar area was built, and the office and classroom space were dedicated. The parking lot was also paved.

1980s

In May of 1980, the church was hit by a tornado, which ripped off the west transept and destroyed many windows. However, in August of 1980, new, colorful faceted windows were installed and dedicated.

By September of 1984, the congregation was able to burn the mortgage on the first worship building project. Then, on May 5, 1985, ground was broken for the multi-purpose addition on the north side of the church building, and in November of the same year, the new addition was dedicated.

1990s

Our church installed a new organ in 1990, and in 1991, a new ramp was installed at the front of the church for handicap accessibility. In the fall of 1998, the church property was annexed into the city of Sedalia.

The church celebrated its 40th Anniversary in September of 1999.

2000 - 2019

Later, in 2006, an elevator was installed, which added another form of handicap accessibility. In July of 2009, the church celebrated its 50th Anniversary of spreading the good of God’s love. That same year, a new church sign on Highway 50 and a new lighted cross on the building were dedicated. In 2018, an outdoor pavilion was completed, along with playground equipment.

Today

For over 60 years, Our Savior Lutheran Church has been welcoming those who wish to seek the Lord, and there are many opportunities to be active in our church. Our church service, led by Reverend Andrew Tessone, begins at 9:00 a.m., and Sunday school classes are directly after. Sunday school is not just for small children; adults also have a class and refreshments. Our church also has women’s and men’s Bible studies, confirmation classes for 7th and 8th grades, adult instruction classes when needed, youth fellowship groups for both 5th through 8th grades and high school age, and many other groups you can become involved with. God has blessed our church in so many ways, and we invite you to join us as we praise God, from whom all blessings flow.
